Fifteen-year-old Fern is stranded on a strange planet among people who are haunted by the threat of an alien race that once enslaved them. Surrounded by people with highly-developed paranormal abilities, she struggles to fit in but often falls short of her goals. Fern falls in love with a young man who is betrothed to her adopted sister, Tira, triggering conflict between them. In her quest to discover herself, she journeys to the sea, the mountains, into the wilderness, and within her own psyche.
